All the same, before going out and buying the first citronella collar product you come across, you ought to make perfectly sure that citronella is safe for your dog. Safety, in this case boils down to toxicity.

Is Citronella Oil Toxic?

From the EPA: Assessing Risks to Human Health

In studies using laboratory animals, Oil of Citronella shows little or no toxicity. The only concern is skin irritation. Because some products are applied to human skin, EPA requires proper precautionary labeling to help assure safe use.

Therefore, if used according to label instructions, citronella is not expected to pose health risks to people, including children and other sensitive populations.

Oil of Citronella has been used extensively since 1948 without any reports of adverse effects of concern.

Here is what ASPCA(Animal Poison Control) says in their FAQs

Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products out of reach. If ingested, they can produce stomach irritation in pets, and possibly even central nervous system depression.

So, Is Citronella Safe For Dogs?

That answers it! Citronella collar IS safe for dogs! Because the citronella collar emits a mist, the dog will not be able to ingest the citronella. The only way he could is if his collar came off and he chewed through the citronella canister. This is why a good, proper fitting, citronella collar is important!

Recently I met up with an old friend who has been searching for a new apartment. People move all of the time and there is nothing wrong with it. But here’s the shocker: she was moving because her dog (a vizsla which she just adopted) was a pretty excessive barker. As Soon As I inquired about exactly why she didn’t use citronella collar she stated that she didn’t wish to harm him. “To hurt your dog with citronella training collar?” You have got to be joking! Not really sure just where this comes from. Regardless, let’s glimpse in to some of the biggest lies related to citronella collar:

Citronella Anti Bark Collar Just Isn’t Effective

An additional bloody fat lie! There’s a lot of proof in existence of which supports the claim that citronella collar just isn’t only successful but 1 of the most effective bark collars on the market.

Cost:

This product is not expensive and they often can be purchased for under $30.

Product Story:

After receiving the receiver collar, I was very eager to start but after reading any instructions, I was advised for you to leave the collar switched off but applied to the dog for 2 days to get pet used to wearing it again. I was very frustrated as i really needed to have my dogs barking problem sorted out quickly. It’s within my nature to be person and after some consideration, I did mange for you to restrain myself and carry out the advice.

A couple of days passed and my dog had time to get comfortable making use of his new citronella dog bark collar, it was time to get started and see if that baby really worked. I started up the collar with very good expectation and waited and waited and waited. Would you believe it? It was a very good 90 minutes before my personal dog barked, it was sensible the wait. As shortly as he barked, his head was overwhelmed by the short blast of mist belonging to the collar. My dog made unexpected jump and his start barking was interrupted as they stood puzzled and confused as to what had just happened to make sure you him. It certainly made him think sometimes more so the next effort he barked only this time around he didn’t even go for a full bark out since the citronella dog bark receiver let off another aerosol blast.

It only took just a couple of blasts of spray towards shut my little guy up that’s why certainly made him think hard about whether he should really attempt another bark and / or not. I can say which i am surprised at the best way quickly the citronella doggy bark collar worked, nevertheless, my guy is an awfully quick learner and MY SPOUSE AND I can’t say that everyone has results as quick as this as all dogs have different.

It’s been 2 months now since i have got the citronella canine bark collar and AS I haven’t even used even a full refill of spray yet also to top it off, the battery is still fine. To be honest, the collar hasn’t been busy around I expected it to and I do actually still use it to this day.

I don’t keep the collar for the dog on a permanent basis and never have him wear it during the night time. I use it more now in a controlled manner where I understand of situations where my best dog is more prone to barking. Once he stops barking where Appraisal expect him to will bark, I trick him from disarming the collar and he seems to have clicked on to the very idea of not barking at the changing times when he would usually bark.

Summary:

The citronella dog barking collar has definitely helped me to teach my dog to learn that there’s a certain point through which his barking is acceptable and when it’s not. I like the citronella dog bark collar mainly because it provides a painless means to fix excessive barking and may be the most humane method accepted by most canine owners. It was very very affordable and requires little, if any, maintenance work.

We get asked a lot if it’s okay to use the citronella collar in the crate.

Our first reply to this question is to ask what the cause is of the dog barking in the crate and whether or not the dog is in the process of crate training or has already been trained.

So does using the remote citronella collar require some secret method that the professionals keep to themselves? You bet! Well, okay, it’s not really a secret.

Remote Citronella Collar: Background

The key is to understand that the remote citronella collar is a tool. Just like any other tool, it requires a user. Do you place a hammer on a piece of wood and expect it to build a house by itself? Unless you know magic, the answer hopefully is NO! Just like a hammer, the remote citronella collar requires your input to work. Here’s another way to look at it. Think of the regular (non-remote) citronella collar as being a citronella collar that is on autopilot: the dog barks, the collar detects the bark and it automatically triggers the correction stimulus (the citronella). The remote citronella collar, on the other hand, is not on autopilot and if not managed properly, your training regime (just like a plane with a bad pilot) will crash.

Before we get started, always keep in the back of your mind the function of the remote citronella collar: to change your dog’s attention and associate what it was doing to the negative distraction (the citronella). Just think: distract and associate. That’s all it is doing!

Also, keep in mind that all citronella collars are not punishment, but rather, they are an unpleasant distraction. A shock collar would be a punishment. Now, let’s take a look at how dogs learn.

When something is learned, behavior is changed due to an experience. Usually learning occurs over a series of the same experiences. With each experience, the time between it and the new behavior decreases. Eventually, the specific experience isn’t required and the new changed behavior has now been learned. In this case, the learned behavior is not barking and the experience is the unpleasant citronella spray. When using a citronella collar, each time the dog barks, it will begin to anticipate the spray faster. On a cellular level, the dog’s neural synapses (connections between brain cells) actually become stronger and change their chemical makeup to provide faster responses along this specific memory pathway in the brain.

Remote Citronella Collar: The Secret!

Here’s the catch: the above only works when the behavior is followed by a consistent experience (citronella spray). Consistency is the key with the remote citronella collar. This one factor is being provided for you with high accuracy when you use the non-remote, automatic, citronella collar. In a sense, you are replacing the processing chip that exists in the automatic citronella collar.

This is the secret to the remote citronella collar! You must be consistent! And what does that mean for you? It means always having the remote with you when you are training your dog. Your reaction time needs to be within a consistent time window from when the bad behavior occurs. Typically it needs to be within a matter of seconds with dogs as their associative processing brain power is somewhat limited compared to humans. This basically means they can’t hold information in their brain for very long.

The remote citronella collar gives you the freedom to change behaviors other than barking like jumping on people, licking and respecting boundaries. With this freedom comes the responsibility of being consistent.

Remember this secret of consistency and adhere to it and you’ll succeed every time with the remote citronella collar!

On the subject of the obedient dog one can find lots of methods to accomplish this, the citronella collar being one of these. Many will embody more costly coach-taught training which often are far from reach for quite a few dog owners when a citronella collar can be purchased for much less.

The next, even more budget friendly method, are unquestionably bark collars for dogs. Even so, if I do a simple internet search, it may bring in a lot of data which will include the citronella collar. Also, a shock collar or other bark deterrent might be chosen.

The Most Significant Factors To Watch Out For When Purchasing Citronella Collar

Whichever citronella collar we pick out, nearly all of them happen to be effectively constructed to satisfy your specifications in spite your dog’s size and particular breed of dog.

Almost all the citronella collar brands are likely to be a powerful help with changing just about any unfavorable patterns you could possibly have.

To guarantee that individuals receive the best benefit while using citronella collar you should look at what follows:

What Is The Sizing of The Citronella Collar?

This is really essentially the most noticeable specs. Citronella Collar should be of the correct measurement for your dog and the good thing is a number of the citronella collars are generally constructed to fit the vast majority of dog varieties.

While we have been mentioning citronella collar size, it needs to definitely be outlined you will need also to check that that the entire weight, aside from the overall size, associated with the citronella collar is actually appropriate on your dog.

Citronella Collar Warranties

Warranties are also very important. Generally speaking the manufacturers who are confident that their product will perform well will offer a better warranty and we should take advantage of it. If there is no warranty offered we probably should stay away from this product and spend our money somewhere else. Fortunately, most of citronella collar manufacturers do offer good warranties.

Look For A Training Guide Or Instructional Video

When we find a good citronella collar, the next thing to look to see if it comes with an instructional manual and/or instructional Dvd. This will provide the necessary steps we should take in order to achieve the best possible result.

The Citronella Collar Price

Firstly, it most certainly pays off to do the homework and compare the prices. They can range from $40 to over $100 and, as with any product, the more you pay doesn’t mean a better citronella collar! Citronella collars are great because of their timing of the citronella dispensing from the time the bark occurs. Many people don’t understand how crucial this timing is to achieving a well trained dog.

Around the mid 1990s citronella collar, also referred to as premier citronella collar, was available in the market in the US.

This innovative citronella collar was initially developed in response to the need for a reliable, humane and effective bark control collar.

The idea powering it was the fact that this citronella collar will minimize, or even eradicate, abnormal barking simply by making use of safe citronella spray.

Fine, indeed they designed a fabulous humane bark collar. So what! The important debate is without a doubt: truly does the device show good results? Just what good is a unhazardous citronella collar when it cannot work?

What Is Citronella Collar?

This unique citronella collar looked like the normal shock collar but having the inclusion of just a compact citronella compartment. In the beginning, this bark recognition system was comprised of just a microphone. This at a later time ended up being superseded by means of a combined discovery process enabling far more reliable bark recognition.

How Does Citronella Collar Do The Job?

As soon as the citronella collar’s bark discovery system detects barking it fires the spray dispenser and a spray of the citronella will then be spewed in the direction of the dog’s nose.

The positive results with the citronella collar can certainly be due to the actuality that it is affecting 4 out of 5 sensory faculties: sight, touch, sound and smell. Provided the appropriate circumstances and breed of dog, the citronella collar squirt could well be heard by a dog on top of that, consequently experiencing feedback by all of the 5 senses.

Dependent on the dog’s reason for barking, it’s been established that almost all dogs because of the hatred with the fragrance from citronella, will rapidly eliminate barking in order to avoid getting sprayed any more. Just as with any kind of system which has a sensor / probe, however, the item only operates successfully when it is appropriately fitted.

Fitting A Citronella Collar

A fantastic thing when it comes to fitting a citronella collar is that generally there is just one important thing you must do. That is, be sure the spray route coming from the emitter towards the region just before the dog’s nostrils is clear. That’s the plan! How uncomplicated was that?

Does Citronella Collar Work?

Research was performed to point out the success of the citronella collar and the shock collar.

Right after getting informed on the way to make use of the particular collar, dog owners were told to implement solely the collar as a technique of teaching the dog just for the extent of the 2 week study. They had been provided either the citronella collar as well as the shock collar in the research

At the end of the study, about 90% of citronella collar owners had been completely satisfied in the decrease of barking. About 50% of the shock collar owners noted complete satisfaction. One thing to make note of here is the rating in this particular research (satisfaction) is often a very subjective one and just isn’t concretely quantifiable. It’s a good idea to bear this in mind while scrutinizing any kind of study!

One particular result with this research was that it really shed some light on the reality that earlier citronella collars possessed too many erroneous stimuli. Barks arising from some other dog could possibly trigger the subject’s citronella collar! As said before, it was fixed the moment the one microphone had been redone using the twin detection model.

Almost all of the makers of the citronella collar contain this combined detection product which exclusively initiates anytime the particular dog having on the collar barks and it won’t detect barks coming from some other dog.

Use The Citronella Collar As A Training Collar!

Several citronella collars at this point feature a remote control to allow on demand triggering from the owner. That enables it to also be employed in order to teach the dog in aspects over and above barking. It has seriously unfolded the choices for training a dog. Citronella collar is now able to be implemented to teach with things like: boundaries, responding to calls, digging, jumping and chewing.

Citronella collar turn out to be a remarkable accessory for universal dog training if it is paired together with relevant positive reinforcement teaching!

If you’ve ever considered using a manually activated bark collar rather than an automatic citronella collar, I’ve got some hints that I learned through trying both. In case you are wondering how it differs from a citronella collar, a manually activated bark collar is one in which you have a remote control and when you hear the dog bark, you press a button to activate the collar, be it any type of collar (most shock collars are available for both automatic and remote control).

We were asked to try the citronella collar by the city due to a noise ordinance violation from our dog barking. I was stubborn and didn’t want our dog to wear the citronella collar because she already wears her invisible pet fence collar. I was so happy to find that the invisible fence company made an attachment that would go on the same collar and give you the ability to remotely stimulate it! We ordered the citronella collar, but didn’t use it at this point.

If you think this method, like I did, is easier or more convenient than the citronella collar, think again! At first I thought it was great, but then I found myself putting the dog out and forgetting to sync the remote to the collar or not having the remote near me when she began barking. Don’t get me wrong, the remote control method works, but its at least ten times more difficult than the citronella collar. I remember getting angry at the remote when I finally found it during one of her barking rampages, only to see that the remote was off. The citronella collar was looking like a better option already. I would get so upset because it took forever to sync up with the collar and by that time she had stopped barking.

The fourth point in the list below should not be taken lightly and is the whole reason for this discussion of the citronella collar. I can’t tell you how relieving having the citronella collar was. Being able to just let the dog out and not have to worry about listening for her bark sold me on the citronella collar. Before using the citronella collar, we even had a microphone outside piped into our stereo so we would be sure to hear if she barked. How crazy is that? With the citronella collar, I got to listen to music inside finally. To be completely unbiased, though, I must mention that the citronella collar does require citronella refills and others do not. This was a minor sacrifice given the amount of stress and rummaging around for a lost remote the citronella collar saved me.

Reasons to use the citronella collar over remote controlled collars

Don’t have to keep a remote with you at all times (citronella collar is hands free!)

One more battery you don’t have to buy (remote collars require an additional battery)

Citronella collar is instant – you don’t have to wait for a remote to sync with the collar

Citronella collar is hands/worry free! - You have to listen for your dog’s barking with remote collars

The bottom line is this: unlike the citronella collar, when you use a remote controlled bark collar there are many ongoing steps that require your attention and response for it to discipline your dog correctly. The citronella collar is a self contained system that does not require your intervention to correct the dog. Before you buy a bark collar, think about your lifestyle and how it’s operation fits into your daily life.

So you’ve got a barking issue with your dog?

Comprehending the way a method or device affects the dog’s brain cells (neurons) provides you with better insight into teaching your dog. Well, lets get down and dirty inside the scientific research driving this. It comes down to classical conditioning. But, more specifically, delay conditioning. Initially let’s explore classical conditioning on a high level, then we’ll dive into delay conditioning at the more detailed level.

What exactly is classical conditioning?

It’s simply any animal which has a brain developing a neural (here are those crazy brain cells again) interconnection based on repeated stimuli and response.

Who hasn’t heard about Pavlovian Conditioning and Pavlov’s dog, right? Well this is classical conditioning! Whenever the stimulus, the dog barking in our example, takes place, the dog receives a spray from the citronella collar which is linked to an distressing olfactory (smell) memory. With each and every additional bark, the neural paths between the two parts of the brain grown to be more robust and faster. Every time, via a part of the brain named the hippocampus, short-term memory is created. This same area will begin, over repetition, to send signals to a different part of the brain named cortex which stores the final connection in permanent memory. Thus, classical conditioning has completed.

What almost all people forget discuss is the type of classical conditioning which is being used. There is something known as delay conditioning (simply a type of classical conditioning). This just suggests there is a delay in between the stimulus (bark) and the response (bad smell to the dog). There’s a right degree of delay for each and every stimulus-response combination and it turns out that the citronella collar offers the proper extent of delay for the response to efficiently become permanent memory. It as a result provides one of the best remedies in dog bark training.
